Art & Dance
"Before a child talks, they sing. Before they write, they draw. As soon as they stand, they dance. Art is fundamental to human expression."

As the Arts team here at Skyview School, we deeply value the arts in education and support arts integration as a vehicle for deeper learning. We would love to share with you some of the research being conducted and presented in support of arts education and it's importance in the development of a more wholistic intelligence.
The Multiple Intelligences Theory
“Any intelligence can be used artistically.”
"The Happy Meeting of Multiple Intelligences and the Arts"
This is a Harvard University article advocating for arts education based on the notion that there is no one type of “artistic intelligence,” but that art making calls upon all of our modes of intelligence (spatial, linguistic, musical, anatomical, naturalistic, interpersonal, intrapersonal, bodily-kinesthetic, etc). November/December 1999.
"M.I. and Habits of Mind in Arts Education"
Howard Gardner and Ellen Winner discuss MI and arts education in a video.
Habits of Mind found in the (visual) arts classroom include: Observe (what do you notice?), Envision (what would happen if you changed this?), Express (understanding self and communicating with others)
Working Styles identified: Engage and Persist (perseverance), Stretch and Explore (take risks and experiment), Reflect (explain process and goals/evaluate what is and isn’t working)
"The Theory of Multiple Intelligences in Dance Education"
Thorough analysis of how M.I. applies to dance education. January 2014.
The Arts and Science
“GE hires a lot of engineers. We want young people who can do more than add up a string of numbers and write a coherent sentence. They must be able to solve problems, communicate ideas and be sensitive to the world around them. Participation in the arts is one of the best ways to develop these abilities.”
– Clifford V. Smith, President of the General Electric Foundation
The Importance of STEAM
This article discusses the importance of STEAM vs. STEM and how arts education teaches ethics.
"My Art Students Are Scientists"
Applying the scientific method to arts education.
NPR Science Friday "Science and Art in Motion"
Podcast episode about how dance and physics inform each other. August 2018.
Art and Creativity
". . . the arts have been an inseparable part of the human journey; indeed, we depend on the arts to carry us toward the fullness of our humanity. We value them for themselves, and because we do, we believe knowing and practicing them is fundamental to the healthy development of our children's minds and spirits. That is why, in any civilization - ours included - the arts are inseparable from the very meaning of the term 'education.' We know from long experience that no one can claim to be truly educated who lacks basic knowledge and skills in the arts."
–National Standards for Arts Education
We leave you with a few videos to look over when you have time, that continue to spotlight the value of creativity and arts education.
