The
Personal Intelligences
While
all of the intelligences are addressed by Skyview, we contend
that the intrapersonal and interpersonal intelligences
are central to school life and success in the greater community.
We believe that the healthy, constructive functioning and development
of the intrapersonal and interpersonal intelligences are foundational
to successful learning and effective participation as a member
of society. Thus, Skyview places an emphasis on these two intelligences
above and beyond the others.
Skyview
aligns itself with Daniel Goleman’s (1997) definition
of the intrapersonal and interpersonal intelligences outlined
in his book, Emotional Intelligence. Goleman places value on
the constructive development and use of these two intelligences
as ways of enlightening self and society. Expeditionary Learning
Schools’ Design Principles are used to define and guide
the values and beliefs of our emotional intelligence curriculum. They
are:
1.
The Primacy of Self-Discovery
2. The Having of Wonderful Ideas
3. The Responsibility for Learning
4. Empathy and Caring
5. Success and Failure
6. Collaboration and Competition
7. Diversity and Inclusion
8. The Natural World
9. Solitude and Reflection
10. Service and Compassion
The
Design Principles also reflect our beliefs as they relate
to teaching, learning, and the school
culture in
general.
